The centres prisoner population is generally comprised of between 60 to 70 per cent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The centre's previous cell capacity was 496 (396 within the secure unit and 100 at the centre's farm).  To accommodate the growth in prisoner numbers, Lotus Glen Correctional Centre underwent a $445 million refurbishment and expansion.

As a result of the redevelopment, the capacity facilities have been expanded to house an additional 300 secure cells and 24 low-security farm beds.  The secure centre has a capacity of approximately 696 cells, and the low custody facility has a capacity to accommodate 124 prisoners.

The centre provides prisoners with meaningful work opportunities in industry and farm work areas which provide skills that can be used by the prisoners on release in the local region.
